Both Orwell and Huxley raise issues that are present in our world today. The world is threatened by restricted or denial of information flow and too much information.  Orwell`s fear of those who would ban books is something that should concern us especially in undemocratic regimes that do not accept criticisms. Such is the case in Uganda where in December 2021, a PEN (Poets, Essayists, Novelist) award winner Kakwenza Rukirabashaija was arrested following a tweet criticizing President Museveni and his son Muhozi. Kakwenza was also arrested in 2020 for authoring a book titled The Greedy Barbarian. Governments conceal information from citizens in various ways for reasons such as national security, spending a lot of taxpayers' money on classified expenditures yet taxpayers are exploited in taxation without accountability. Orwell was also right about us becoming a captive culture, a small percentage of the population that owns resources controls the masses and such are corporations lik

Final project: what is the role of the Media in popularising Skin lightening/whitening products among African women?

Image
Skin lightening products have increasingly become popular in many African countries especially among women. This is because white or lighter skin is seen as more attractive and is linked with higher status, privilege, and beauty. 40% of African women bleach their skin, in Nigeria- 77%, Togo- 59%, South Africa- 35%, Senegal- 27%, and Mali 25% use skin lighting products (According to the WHO, as of 2011). The media has played a major role in promoting this perception of lighter skin as revered as beautiful compared to dark skin, on billboards, magazines, television commercials, music videos, films, products labels, digital adverts, and on the internet. All these platforms show images and videos, many photoshopped, airbrushed, and retouched to make lighter skin look more attractive and desirable.  I will look at Ads, movies and TV shows, and celebrities & music videos. I will consider three forms of media including, ads, movies and Tv shows, and celebrities and music videos, and

Social Networking sites such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Tiktok among others have influenced the lives of users in various ways both positive and negative. In this project, my focus will be on Facebook. Before looking at the impact on self-esteem, I will look at how one celebrated local artist back in my home country uses her Facebook book page, who posts there, what kind of content, the photos, the colors and look in the how the media concepts of production, technique, and reception are applied. Production' the account is owned by a music artist Rema Namakula, a celebrated artist in Uganda, she{s considered one of the well-to-do artists so has good money.  Technique- The photos shared on her page, some are natural, others, planned, edited, and enhanced for better appearance. She also uses bright colors that captivate the eyes, blue, red, white. Reception- Her followers and viewers use the like, share and comment options to react to her posts and photos and they receive a larg

Mobile and one of the techniques was to use a school setting since it comprises of young people with mobile phones who would want to save their money on data by using the discounts hence more turnover for Y! Mobile.  Using TWICE too was a great technique because the J-pop, K-pop the dance group is popular among young people, and this would appeal to the fans to subscribe for the discount. The Colour- transitioned from dull colors at the start of the ad to bright colors that are appealing to young people, easy to identify, and can be associated with exciting and interesting moods.   The laboratory experiment- I think it calls the attention of the viewer to try out the discount, to experiment with the discount and they will have interesting results. The production of the ad is by Y! Mobile, a Japanese mobile operator, and Asymmetric digital sub

Akoth Alice 1120191001 Advanced Media   Kimo-kawaii Catharsis: millennials, depression, and the empty healing of Sanrio's Gudetama The argument is very convincing because it explains the social and cultural impact of Gudetama that has been ignored or downplayed by society. Gudetama portrays a clear picture of the experiences that young Japanese go through in the work environment. The pressure associated with work. They do not enjoy the experience, but they must continue working, otherwise, they will be seen as lazy. But the experience is having a negative impact on their social life and mental health. So, in Gudetama the young millennials find a healing or soothing experience similar to theirs that is described as Kimo-kawaii (gross cute), so they feel they are not in this experience alone. Gudetama also reflects the extent to which mental health is not taken seriously in Japanese society. Even if someone is having depression or any mental health problems, they do not
