The Daily Monitor News Paper.
The Daily
Monitor newspaper is a privately owned newspaper under the Nation Media Group,
NMG based in Nairobi Kenya founded by His Highness the Aga Khan IV. The Daily
Monitor was founded in 1992 as The Monitor and was in June 2005 renamed The Daily
Monitor. The private ownership of the newspaper to a great extent guarantees a high degree of independence in its operations, business, and reporting, it
hires independently-minded journalists and reporters to ensure independent reporting.
The newspaper is regulated by the government through the Press and Journalists Act passed in 1995. It is in charge of licensing journalists, addressing issues arising against the media, taking disciplinary action against journalists.
It is also in charge of licensing journalists, addressing issues arising
against the media, taking disciplinary action against journalists among other
roles concerning the media.
PJA established the
Media Council charged with accrediting foreign journalists and licensing
freelance journalists working for foreign media. The newspaper is also regulated
by the Media Centre established in 2005 ns charged with providing official
information to the media.
Production at the
Daily Monitor is controlled by Nation Media Group, the largest Media House in the east
and central Africa operating in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda. Adverting
takes up a big share of the newspaper as a source of revenue.
The structure of the company is well organized, and it protects the rights of the reporters being an independent newspaper. The company for instance provides legal services to reporters who get into trouble with the government over published articles for example journalists who are arrested on duty or for publishing stores identifying government weaknesses for example Andrew Mwenda who was taken to court for the article “Kabila Paid Uganda In Gold—Says Report.”
The Daily Monitor is more trusted by the public as a source of information compared to the government-owned New Vision newspaper.
The independence
of the media is limited by the regulations put in place by the government such
as licensing, for those the go against the government risk losing their
licenses.
